The Questions Every First-Time Mum Googles at 2am

(You’re Not Alone)

If you’re reading this with one hand while feeding a newborn, or lying awake listening to your baby breathe to make sure they’re still breathing (again), I just want you to know something first:

You are completely normal.

Every first-time mum I meet — calm, capable, organised, loving — arrives at her newborn session with the same quiet worries.

They just don’t always say them out loud.

Instead, they Google them.

Usually at 2am.
Usually while exhausted.
Usually while wondering how everyone else seems to have this figured out.

So I want to say the things you’re afraid to ask — and answer them honestly.

“What if my baby screams the whole time?”

This is the number one fear.
The Olympic gold medal of worries.

Babies cry.
They feed.
They wriggle.
They poo mid-photo. (Yes. Really.)
They need cuddles, breaks, and sometimes just… a minute.

That’s not a disaster.

That’s the session.

A newborn session is not a performance.
It’s a slow morning where your baby leads, and we follow. Always.

“What if my baby won’t sleep?”

Some babies sleep like tiny angels.
Some stare at me like they’re judging my life choices.

Both are perfect.

Awake babies give us eye contact, tiny expressions, and moments you won’t even remember existed in the fog of early days.
Sleepy babies give us softness and stillness.

There is no wrong version of your baby.
(And no baby gets “sent home for not cooperating”.)

“What if I look awful?”

This one sits heavy.

Because while your body has just done something extraordinary, your brain is busy worrying about:

  • your tummy
  • your arms
  • your face
  • your hair
  • your skin
  • your exhaustion
  • the fact that nothing fits and nothing feels right

Here’s the truth:

You do not need to look “ready” to be photographed.

You do not need to lose anything, fix anything, or wait for anything.

I photograph you as you are — gently, honestly, kindly.
No harsh posing. No pressure. No pretending.

And if there’s something you’re self-conscious about?
You can tell me quietly.
I will handle it with care.

“What if I’m wasting money?”

This is the fear almost everyone has — even if they never say it out loud.

Because it’s not just money, is it?
It’s the weight of deciding whether this moment is worth something, when everything already feels expensive, uncertain, and new.

What I see, years later, is this:

Parents never regret having the photos.

Years down the line, when babies are taller than you expect, the regret is never having them —
it’s wishing there were more.

“What if my house isn’t nice enough for wall art?”

This one makes me smile.

Because your home doesn’t need to look like Pinterest.
It just needs to be yours.

Artwork isn’t about interiors — it’s about anchoring memories to the walls you live your life in.

And if you can’t imagine it yet?
That’s okay.
That’s part of my job.

“What if I’m doing something wrong?”

This is the quietest fear.
And the loudest inside.

There is no wrong way to be a new mum in my studio.

Feed.
Rock.
Cry.
Sit silently.
Ask questions.
Change your mind.
Arrive late.
Need a break.
Need another break.

You are not being judged here.

What I want you to know (before you book anything)

You don’t need to:

  • have a routine
  • have a calm baby
  • have the right clothes
  • have a flat tummy
  • know what you’re doing
  • feel confident
  • be organised

You just need to show up with your baby.

I’ll take care of the rest.

And if you’re still unsure… that’s okay too.
You can take your time.
You can ask questions.
You can message me and say, “I don’t even know what I’m asking.”

Most mums do.

And if you’re reading this at 2am, wondering if you’re the only one feeling this way — you’re not.

I promise.
